My Summer Camp Experience

 

In that camp I learned myself by watching and by speaking with others. Interactions with the “golden oldies” of Baekje would stir a quiet introspection, reminding me that the smallest, misplaced things can bend the shape of what is to come.

 

Gong-ju’s temples — exemplifying the sheer power of one’s own will — showed me that I, too, can create and steer my own life, rather than remain a passive observer. My work, however small, can create a better future by inviting other people of all ages to reflect through lending them a map of my experience that I drew.

 

That Baekje mountainous fortress that we climbed reminded that while it is easy to go up by being consistent and taking a break, one must, also, be very cautious. The summit, the final destination may offer nothing to win and then you would still have to climb down. Climbing down, however, may prove not only difficult, but also dangerous — there are no barriers and this action may easily render the last moment of your life as you roll off a cliff or a corner.

 

Those two are the major lessons that I drew from my experience in Chungnam.

 

나의 여름 캠프 경험

이번 캠프에서 저는 타인을 관찰하고 대화를 나누며, 제 자신을 배워나갔습니다.

백제의 ‘골든 올디스(Golden Oldies)’들과의 만남은 조용한 내면의 성찰을 불러일으켰고, 가장 사소하고 잘못 놓인 것들이 미래의 형태를 바꿀 수 있다는 사실을 떠올리게 했습니다.

공주의 사찰들은 — 한 사람의 의지만으로도 이룰 수 있는 위대한 힘의 상징이자 증거로서 — 제게도 제 삶을 스스로 만들어가고 이끌 수 있다는 용기를 주었습니다. 단순히 관찰자에 머무르지 않고요.

비록 제 작업이 작고 사소할 수 있지만, 그 경험의 지도를 다른 이들에게 건네줌으로써, 그들 역시 삶을 돌아보게 만들고 더 나은 미래를 만들어갈 수 있도록 초대할 수 있다고 믿게 되었습니다.

우리가 함께 오른 백제의 산성은 또 다른 교훈을 주었습니다. 꾸준히 나아가고 때때로 휴식을 취하면 정상까지 오르는 건 그리 어렵지 않을 수 있지만, 항상 조심해야 한다는 점입니다.

정상에 오른다 해서 반드시 어떤 보상이 주어지는 것은 아니며, 결국 우리는 다시 내려와야 하니까요. 그런데 내려오는 길은 종종 오르는 길보다 더 어렵고, 더 위험할 수 있습니다. 보호 장치도 없고, 자칫하면 낭떠러지나 모퉁이에서 인생의 마지막 순간을 맞이할 수도 있는 일입니다.

이 두 가지가 바로 제가 충남에서의 경험을 통해 얻은 가장 큰 교훈입니다.
