[2025 하계] 청년 3차 - 'Rachel Tseng' 참가자 수기 (미국 거주)

 

This summer, I had the opportunity to join OKFriends Camp for the second time. Last year was one of my favorite experiences, so I was really looking forward to coming back. I remember last year, I was so close to my group and SPs and even made a few friends that I still keep in contact with today. This year, I still enjoyed my time, but it felt a little different from before.

 

One of the highlights for me was visiting the elementary school and painting the flag with our group. I thought it was a very fun way to be engaged with the group and also share a little bit about your own culture while painting the flag. We all painted a flag of our own country that we came from and it was really fun to see all the different colors and nations on our Korea flag. It was also really great to bring this big flag around the different places we went to take pictures. In the elementary school, I really enjoyed playing games and getting to know the other kids also in Chungnam but not in my group. Another one of my favorite memories from this trip was the K Crafts. Making the dragon fly craft was so much fun, and it’s the kind of activity I’ll always remember as I have a souvenir to bring back home to show my family. I also enjoyed all the meals we had during the trip. The meals were always very delicious and I enjoyed eating them with other people in my group. I do wish there were opportunities to eat meals with other people in the camp as we spend every meal with the same few people in our group.

 

Although I had an overall positive experience, I didn’t enjoy being placed in the Chungnam group. Because it was my second year, I didn’t have a choice in location, but I had really wanted to go to Busan or Honam because they had exciting activities. Many

people in Chungnam felt the schedule wasn’t as engaging, which made it harder to stay enthusiastic. I felt that the museums and campus tours were a bit repetitive and didn’t capture much interest from everyone. It also didn’t make much sense that we were touring campuses because most of us were already in college. Many people seemed bored during these activities, along with myself. I think it would be nice to include more interactive and meaningful experiences. One big thing that I noticed was that this year felt very different socially from the previous year. Last year, I made a lot of friends and was very close to everyone in my group. I remember, I knew every single person in my group, including the SPs, even so at the end, the SPS wrote all of us personalized notes. We also all signed each other shirts with very personal and deep messages as

we all knew each other. This year I didn’t feel as close to my group or my SPs, and I talked to a few other people in other groups as well and they all said they felt similarly.

I’m not sure what the reasoning for this is, but I noticed a lot of people felt this way.

 

Even with these challenges, I’m still thankful for the experience. I’m glad I had the chance to return to Korea, meet new people, and learn more about the culture. I hope in the future there can be more ways to have fun activities so everyone can feel as excited as I did my first year.

 

이번 여름, 두 번째 OKFriends 캠프에 참가할 기회를 갖게 되었습니다.

작년 캠프가 제 인생에서 가장 기억에 남는 경험 중 하나였기 때문에, 다시 돌아갈 수 있다는 생각에 정말 기대가 컸습니다. 작년에는 제 그룹원들과 SP들과 아주 가까워졌고, 지금도 연락을 이어가고 있는 친구들도 생겼습니다. 올해도 즐거운 시간이었지만, 작년과는 조금 다른 느낌이 있었습니다.

 

이번 캠프에서 가장 인상 깊었던 순간 중 하나는 초등학교를 방문해서 그룹과 함께 국기를 그렸던 시간이었습니다. 서로 자신의 문화를 나누며 함께 참여할 수 있어서 정말 재미있었고, 각자 자신이 온 나라의 국기를 그리는 모습이 흥미로웠습니다. 다양한 색깔과 나라들이 하나의 ‘한국’ 국기에 모여 있는 걸 보는 건 정말 특별한 경험이었어요. 그리고 우리가 그린 큰 국기를 들고 다니며 여러 장소에서 사진을 찍는 것도 정말 좋았습니다. 초등학교에서 다른 충남 그룹의 아이들과 게임을 하고 친해진 것도 즐거운 추억입니다.

또 하나 기억에 남는 활동은 K-크래프트 체험이었습니다. 전통 장난감인 ‘잠자리 연 만들기’는 너무 재미있었고, 집에 가져가서 가족들에게 보여줄 수 있는 기념품이 생겨서 기쁩니다. 캠프 동안 먹었던 모든 식사도 매우 맛있었고, 그룹 친구들과 함께 식사하는 시간이 늘 즐거웠습니다. 다만, 매 끼니를 같은 그룹 사람들과만 먹다 보니 다른 그룹 사람들과 교류할 기회가 적었던 점은 조금 아쉬웠습니다.

 

전체적으로는 긍정적인 경험이었지만, 아쉬운 점도 있었습니다. 이번에 충남 지역에 배정된 것이 조금 아쉬웠습니다. 두 번째 참가자였기 때문에 지역 선택권이 없었지만, 사실 부산이나 호남 지역에 가고 싶었어요. 그 지역들은 활동이 더 재미있어 보였거든요. 충남에 있던 많은 친구들도 일정이 조금 덜 흥미롭다고 느꼈고, 그래서 캠프에 대한 열정이 줄어드는 경우도 있었습니다. 특히 박물관이나 캠퍼스 투어는 비슷한 내용이 반복되고, 대부분이 이미 대학생이라 관심을 끌기 어려웠던 것 같아요. 많은 친구들이 그 시간 동안 지루해했고, 저도 비슷한 느낌을 받았습니다. 좀 더 참여형이고 의미 있는 활동이 포함되었으면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었습니다.

무엇보다 이번 캠프는 작년에 비해 사회적인 분위기가 다르게 느껴졌습니다. 작년에는 제 그룹과 정말 친했고, SP들까지 모든 사람을 잘 알고 있었어요. 캠프가 끝날 때는 SP들이 우리 모두에게 손편지를 써줬고, 서로의 티셔츠에 의미 있고 진심 어린 메시지를 적어주며 작별인사를 했던 게 인상 깊었어요. 하지만 올해는 그룹원들과 SP들과 그렇게 가까워졌다는 느낌이 들지 않았고, 다른 그룹의 참가자들도 비슷한 이야기를 하더라고요. 왜 그랬는지 정확히는 모르겠지만, 많은 사람들이 그렇게 느꼈다는 점이 기억에 남습니다.

 

그럼에도 불구하고, 이번 경험에 감사한 마음입니다. 다시 한국에 와서 새로운 사람들을 만나고 문화를 더 깊이 이해할 수 있었던 기회였기 때문입니다. 앞으로 더 많은 사람들이 첫해의 저처럼 설레고 즐거운 경험을 할 수 있도록, 더 다양한 재미있는 활동이 포함되었으면 좋겠습니다.
