As a kid born and raised in Ecuador, studies in the United Kingdom and is thousands of kilometres away from Korea, the idea of being Korean often felt strange and distant to me. Because of family circumstances and my own personal struggles, I never really had the opportunity to properly embrace my Korean identity. For a long time, Korea was a part of my background, but I did not truly feel connected to it.
That began to change when my cousins told me about a camp I had never heard of: OKFriends. Without knowing much about what to expect, I decided to apply. Little did I know that this experience would change the way I see myself, my Korean roots, and what it truly means to be Korean.
Throughout the camp, OKFriends has taught us about the difficult journey Korea has gone through to become the country we know today. From the Joseon Dynasty and the hardships of war to the challenges and conflicts that continue to shape the Korean Peninsula, learning about Korea’s history has given me a much deeper appreciation for its resilience and development. However, beyond the historical lessons, OKFriends has taught me something much more personal: the importance of connection, peace, and finding my way back to my Korean roots.
One of the most meaningful parts of this camp has been meeting so many other overseas Koreans. Each person has their own language, culture, family story, and background. Some grew up surrounded by Korean culture, while others, like me, have experienced Korea from a much greater distance. Meeting all of these people made me realise that there is no single way to be Korean. We may come from completely different places, but we can still share a connection through our heritage, our values, and our desire to understand where we come from.
This experience has also changed the way I understand Korean identity. I have realised that being Korean is not only determined by the country where someone is born or the language they speak. It can also be reflected in the values we share, the way we treat others, our ability to maintain peace and harmony, and our determination to keep moving forward despite difficult circumstances. Seeing these qualities in the people I have met at OKFriends has helped me feel that I am also part of this community.
Although I have struggled in the past to build a strong connection with my Korean roots, OKFriends has become a bridge between who I was and who I want to become. It has given me the opportunity to reconnect with a part of myself that I once felt distant from. More importantly, it has made me want to continue learning Korean, understanding Korean culture and history, and strengthening my connection with my heritage.
I came to OKFriends without knowing what to expect. I leave with something much more valuable: a stronger understanding of where I come from and, most importantly, a reason to be proud of who I am. For me, OKFriends was not simply a camp in Korea. It was the beginning of my journey to truly reconnect with my Korean roots.
